Type 2 diabetes mellitus has become an epidemic. Treatment is multifaceted and includes education, evaluation for complications, and determination of an initial therapeutic regimen. Most patients require pharmacologic therapy in addition to lifestyle changes to achieve and maintain glycemic control. There are a number of medications available for initial therapy.
